Work Summary

The following tasks are performed as part of Lumav’s server maintenance and monitoring service:

    1. Maintenance work – tasks performed periodically and continuously by Lumav to ensure smooth and stable server operation without the client having to request them separately.
    2. Automated tasks – tasks performed by automated systems 24/7/365, ensuring continuous server monitoring and quality control, providing necessary background information for various tasks and service quality improvement.
    3. On-demand tasks – tasks performed based on client requests, monitoring notifications, or needs identified by Lumav during daily work or periodic server audits.
    4. Audit – a thorough periodic audit of all server aspects, performed during server setup and as needed or requested later.
    5. Additional work – any work not listed above, performed based on agreement or for an additional fee.

  • Number of processes
Hardware Operation Checks
  • Status of storage devices (SMART, disk errors, Write Cache, filesystem tests)
  • Status of hardware or software RAID
  • General hardware check (e.g., DRAC info)
  • Temperature
  • Errors recorded at the kernel level
  • Age of hardware
Backup Operation Checks
  • Functionality of backup software like BackupPC, Bacula, RDiffBackup, RSync
  • Verification of MySQL/PostgreSQL database backups (SQL dump)
  • Verification of backups of various special services (e.g., Hansa text copies, Zimbra backups)
  • Verification of simple file-based backups (e.g., tar, cp)
Security Checks
  • Modernity of the server OS and need for software updates
  • Checking permissions of important directories
  • Check for private data placed on the website
  • User and access information (shell users, SSH keys, etc.)
  • Various firewall and access rights tests (continuous real-time remote access check)
  • Recursive DNS check
  • Number of emails in the queue, detection of possible local virus/spam outbreaks
  • Checking for various specific security vulnerabilities and hacks
  • DoS attack notification
Other Checks
  • Clock synchronization and time zone accuracy
  • Server name (hostname) check
  • Functionality of the local name server service
  • Automatic check of the correctness of the nameserver zone file data
  • Various standardization checks
Special Solutions
  • Specific application- or service-based checks
  • Specific checks based on the needs of a particular client
  • High Availability (HA) check (Linux-HA, DRBD, cluster software)
  • Check for the presence or attributes of a specific file
Automatic Information Storage
  • Kernel and operating system version
  • Server make and serial number
  • Server uptime, boot time
  • Network configuration
  • Server installation time
Recording Configuration File Changes
  • Registration of system configuration changes on the server (once a day)
  • Registration of configuration changes of additional devices (e.g., switches, routers) (once a day)
Graphical Monitoring of Resources Over Time

LumavServAdmin software downloads data from the server, processes it, and presents it graphically over time. This data helps identify possible bottlenecks on the server or detect potential problems in the future.

    • CPU usage and usage type (user processes, kernel, IO, virtualization)
    • Server load (load average) and its correlation with the number of CPUs and IO usage
    • Memory and swap usage
    • Uptime
    • Disk space and number of files used
    • Detailed usage of disks and other block devices (writing, reading, IO latency, IO-merge efficiency)
    • Network latency (PING), considering monitoring overhead
    • Number of local network devices
    • Number of active connections
    • Network usage (upload and download speed), volume
    • Temperature, fan speed, power usage
    • Number of users
    • Number of processes
    • Number of unsent emails
    • Response speed of the website or other web service at various layers
    • Monitoring of additional devices (e.g., switches, routers, UPS) (temperature, network traffic, etc.)
On-demand Work
  • Making changes to service configurations.
  • Service optimization.
  • Log file analysis and check.
  • Performing speed, load, and other tests.
  • Analysis of load graphs.
  • Data recovery from backup.
  • Finding solutions for technical, OS-specific issues.
  • Changing the operating system and kernel settings.
  • Making suggestions for adding, updating, or replacing hardware or software.
  • Responding to information requests about the server or its documentation.
  • Relevant consultation.
  • Fixing all errors directly caused by Lumav’s actions within its responsibility area.
Audit

The audit is a methodological, detailed server review process based on specific points, detailed in the company’s internal documentation. In brief, it includes:

  • In-depth analysis of information read by Lumav’s monitoring system (see Automated Tasks).
  • Analysis of server load graphs.
  • Check of hardware age, BIOS, firmware versions, disk checks.
  • Verification of software updates on the server and mapping possible solutions.
  • Check of server standardization.
  • Review of the server’s current state (processes, open ports, network quality, disk speed).
  • Check of correct operation of automatic scripts (cron).
  • Analysis of login history and service usage frequency.
  • Check of logging capabilities and more detailed log file analysis.
  • Check of data on file systems (for rootkits, worms, viruses).
  • Firewall audit.
  • Network security scanning.
  • Security check of service and application configurations (postfix, apache, php, dns).
  • Backup check.
  • If necessary, physical server check (secure location, security, access control, etc.).
  • If the server is managed by Lumav – validation, restructuring, and updating of server documentation.
Additional Work

Additional work is performed by prior agreement, at an hourly rate or agreed project fee. Additional work includes tasks not listed in the previous points or outside Lumav’s contractual responsibilities. Examples of additional work:

  • Work outside working hours or on an urgent basis (faster than the corresponding service package allows).
  • Installation or configuration of services or applications not specified in the contract.
  • Server installation or reinstallation.
  • Major updates (e.g., distribution version major update).
  • Data migration from one service provider to another or from one service/solution to another.
  • Backup-related work not concerning specific one-time restoration work (e.g., searching for vaguely specified data in the archive, testing different versions).
  • Training and consultation not related to specific ordered services.
  • Configuration and management of custom solutions or non-standard software.
  • Development, programming, and script writing work.
  • Any significant modification work.
  • Any work outside the principle of smooth operation.

Regular work may become additional work under the following circumstances at Lumav’s request:

  • Administrator access rights have been confirmed by the Client for third parties, and there is reason to believe that the need for work was caused by their actions or negligence.
  • The need for work arose from the Client’s actions in a service layer that should be under Lumav’s responsibility. This does not apply if the action was previously coordinated with Lumav.
  • The need for work arose from the Client’s inactivity when Lumav had previously notified and justified the need for the activity.
